Nachdem sich die ursprüngliche Formation der Mothers of Invention nach einer kurzen Tournee durch Kanada im Sommer 1969 aufgelöst hatte, heuerte Zappa Musiker für seine Studioarbeit an, bevor er eine neue Mothers-Formation im August 1970 zusammenstellte. Die neue Band wurde mit dem Bassisten Jim Pons und den Sängern Mark Volman und Howard Kaylan erweitert, die Zappa alle von den Turtles übernommen hatte, jener Gruppe, die als Teeny-Sensation Hits produzierte und die Spitze der Top of the Pops mit solchen Hits wie 'Happy Together' und 'Elenore' erklommen hatte. Es wird erzählt, daß Zappa damals auch versucht habe, das frühere Monkees-Mitglied Micky Dolenz als Schlagzeuger zu gewinnen, aber Dolenz lehnte das Angebot ab.
