"Especially when you're a real lover of music or a musician yourself, you usually try to keep some kind of a "professional distance" when reviewing music. In the case of Space Debris' "Krautrock-Sessions 1994-2001" I was simply unable to do so. I had heard one of their tunes on a compilation CD before, and this was a tune I was listening twice before playing on that CD. When I heard the complete work under my headphones for the first time I had a feeling of happiness that I didn't have for more than thirty years when listening to music. On one hand this had surely something to do with my very personal and individual perception of music and my previous listening experience. But on the other hand I felt that there's something special about this music also "objectively". The more I listen to this music the more I think that it is some kind of a "missing link" between the original "genuine" Krautrock of the late Sixties and early Seventies and the repertoire of the international music of that time that the Sixties and Seventies German Rock bands wanted to become a part of. The original German Krautkrock was signified through the fact that it largely failed its objective and thus was able to create something completely new. It was the almost dialectical tension between what the members of the original Krautrock bands wanted to play and what they could achieve what made this kind of music "kosmisch" and partly even revolutionary. You have to remember that the members of the original Krautrock bands were a part of the very first adult generation born after the war had ended, which as the whole period of the Third Reich - besides all other criminal and obscene facts - was also signified by Hitler's embargo of foreign culture for the German people. So, as in literature and in the painting arts the German post war musicians had to keep up with their international colleagues, a process that from then on became a part of any kind of specifically "German" culture. In popular music it was the band Lake that from about 1980 on proved that German musicians could unquestionably match international standards, and this was also the definite end of Krautrock in it's original meaning. Quite recently some German bands started to adopt the nimbus of "Kraut" again, and the results were, in some cases even charming, examples of musical inability. In this situation Space Debris appeared with their self released double-LP on extra-heavy vinyl, a superb natural sound quality achieved with the help of two, three and four track recordings, build up of traces of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Santana, the Allman Brothers and many more, and still completely distinct and individual. They don't sound like any German Seventies band but nevertheless present undoubtedly Krautrock. It feels as if Krautrock has finally come to itself, and this is what I called an enigmatic wonder in the last sentence of the introduction. Es ist kein Zufall, dass die Musik überwiegend wie aus dem Jahr 1969 klingt, denn musikalische Vorbilder, alte Fendertürme, Hammond mit Marshall-Amp und Ludwigdrums, sowie analoge Aufnahmetechnik mit 1 (!) bis max. 4 Spuren müssen und sollen zu diesem Sound führen. Wir sind ja bei Weitem nicht die einzigen, die das begriffen haben. Doch im Prog.- und Krautbereich kennen wir keine Band, die so arbeitet. Außerdem ist die Assoziation mit dem Sound von Lieblingsbands aus den frühen Siebzigern gewollt und eine schöne Sache.
Vinyl war ein Muss bei dieser Vorstellung von Sound und wir waren richtig begeistert und verblüfft, wie der Sound sich durch das Vinyl im Vergleich zur CDR verändert hatte, als wir das erste mal die Testpressung hörten: Die Höhen weicher und homogener, alles viel verbundener und wie aus einem Guß. Nachdem unerwartet die erste Auflage schnell weg war, haben wir wegen der großen Nachfrage im April 2004 eine leicht veränderte 2. Auflage pressen lassen. Die Platte verkauft sich ohne Konzerte zum Selbstkostenpreis sehr gut. Es sind noch welche zu erhalten, z.B. über die hier genannten Mailorder (s.o.g.Links) , (s.auch den Button "Vinyl/CDs"). Eine CDR-Version mit Doppelseitigem Inlay im Jewel-Case ist da auch günstig zu bestellen.
Musiker der ersten Platte:Tommy Gorny (Gitarre/Gesang), Tom Kunkel (Hammond/Synth.), Christian Jäger (Drums), außerdem: Uwe Moldrczyk (Bass, wahwah Gitarre), Thomas Schütz (Bass), Rainer Kühnel (Bass), Jochen Meister (Gitarre), Eric Bläss (Gitarre), Sven Köthe (Gesang),Gastmusiker der zweiten Platte: Magic Petra (vocals), Eric Bläß (Gitarre), Thomas Schütz (Bass, Jochen Meister (Gitarre), Rainer Kühnel (Bass), vor allem aber der geniale Daniel Sich (Gitarre beim Titelstück: "Kraut Lok"). Unser Antrieb die Musik zu veröffentlichen ist die Vorstellung, dass da irgendwo ein Freak sitzt und sich einklinkt in unser Feeling und unseren freien Flug nachempfindet. Diese Vorstellung verbindet uns mit Euch.
Die Aufnahmen sind ausschließlich und immer ohne jegliche Absprache spontan entstanden und keiner hat sich über Stil und Spielweise bewusste Gedanken gemacht. Improvisation bedeutet hier nicht einfach, dass der Gitarrist einen Background für Solos hat, sondern alle Instrumente kreieren gleichberechtigt zusammen Figuren und Themen. Musik aus dem momentanen Gefühl heraus, funktioniert nur, wenn im Augenblick des Spiels alle aufeinander hören und eingehen. Das ist etwas ganz anderes als einen Song abzuspulen und seinen Part möglichst gut zu spielen. Die vier essentiellen Musiker-Kriterien Kreativität, Gefühl, technische Ausführung und Zuhören fallen dabei auf einen einzigen Zeitpunkt und es macht deshalb so viel Spaß zu improvisieren. Da der Zuhörer eine Kopie dieser Augenblicke anhört, kann er unter Umständen diese Echtheit und Freiheit der Improvisation mitspüren. Dies funktioniert nur, wenn man gleichberechtigte und gleichstarke Musiker hat, die ohne viel Klärungsbedarf den selben Sinn für Musik haben. Selbst ein Stück wie "Big Babys Birthday" das etwas nach Song klingt und aus dieser Reihe zu fallen scheint, hat zwar noch am ehesten Songstrukturen, ist aber 100ig improvisiert und damit etwas völlig anderes als ein auf dem Reissbrett geplanter und eingeprobter Song. Etwas anderes ist das Abmischen und Schneiden, wo wir sehr perfektionistisch mit viel Detailarbeit vorgegangen sind. Ein ganzes Jahr intensive fast tägliche Arbeit steckt da drin und auch die Cover wurden in Eigenregie fotographiert, entworfen und umgesetzt, wenn auch immer wieder Freunde geholfen haben. Besonderen Dank geht an Oliver Gerhartz, ohne dessen Fotos das zweite Cover nicht möglich wäre.
